What you'll learn

  • Explain scarcity, opportunity cost and gains from trade using a PPF
  • Draw and interpret demand and supply graphs, separating shifts from movements
  • Calculate market equilibrium and midpoint elasticities from simple equations
  • Analyse price controls, taxes and subsidies using surplus and deadweight loss
  • Compare costs, output and pricing under competition, monopoly and oligopoly
  • Evaluate policy responses to externalities, public goods and common resources

About This Course

This course introduces how individuals, firms and governments make choices when resources are scarce. You will build intuition first, then learn to draw the standard graphs and solve simple algebraic models, always finishing with real applications.

Examples run from global markets to local ones in Bangladesh, such as rice and onion prices, rickshaw fares, mobile data plans and garment exports. Any made-up numbers are clearly labelled hypothetical. No calculus is used; elasticity is taught with the midpoint formula.

The course is organised into five modules:

  • Scarcity, choice and gains from trade
  • Demand, supply, equilibrium and elasticity
  • Government intervention and economic welfare
  • Consumer choice, costs and perfect competition
  • Market power and market failure

Each module ends with a quiz, and the course ends with a short policy brief on a real Bangladeshi market.

Requirements
